The Town of Northfield Massachusetts was founded in 1723and is located in Franklin County.
Northfield contains about 3000 year round residents. Northfield only town in the Commonwealth situated on both sides of the Connecticut River.
Northeast Utilities provides the residents and visitors with boat tours on the Connecticut River and has year round recreation and education programs. The Bolger Arts Center is also sited in the town which includes theatre group and community chorus.
On Saturday, June 30, from 7:00 until 9:00p.m. join Northfield Mountain staff and visit a firefly meadow on a summer evening for a memorable experience. Become immersed in the world of fireflies, a world filled with imposters, femmes fatales and poisonous blood. Learn about this amazing insect with its variety of flash patterns and colors as well as how to get involved in an exciting citizen science project sponsored by the Boston Museum of Science. The program begins indoors with an introduction to fireflies and Firefly Watch and then continues outdoors for the summer ritual of watching fireflies. This free event is for ages 12 and older. Visit the Turners Falls fishway and print your very own T-shirt or tote bag and discover the intricate beauty and important function of fish fins and scales. Learn about resident fish as well as fish that return to the Connecticut River to lay their eggs. Drop by anytime between 12 and 2 p.m. at the Turners Falls Fishway to create your work of art using scientifically accurate replicas of Connecticut River fish. Remember to bring a T-shirt or other material to use for fish printing. Fish T-shirts make great Father's Day presents. Please wear clothes that can get stained. This event is part of the 7th Annual Family Fish Day at the Great Falls Discovery Center. The overnight will be full of learning opportunities like setting up your new or borrowed tent, tying knots to hang a tarp over the table for rain protection and cooking over a camp stove and campfire. Fun with nature scavenger hunts, hiking games, fishing instruction and sharing a delicious pasta dinner and hot morning coffee will also be enjoyed by interested participants. Time for relaxation and simple pleasures will round out the weekend and of course, a camp fire and s'mores are on the schedule! Help your family get ready to embark on future camping adventures. Awed by the great power of the sun, civilizations have for centuries celebrated the first day of summer , otherwise known as Midsummer or the Summer Solstice. During this evening paddle on Wednesday, June 20 from 6:30 until 8:45 p.m., we'll explore some of the celebrations from around the world as well as the rich history and natural history of Barton Cove. Ancient waterfalls, historic log drives, dinosaur footprints and nesting bald eagles are unique to this peninsula, cove and "narrows" on the Connecticut River. The striking, rocky ledges, blooming mountain laurel and a visit to a porcupine den will provide plenty of photographic opportunities for hikers exploring one of the most scenic places on Northfield Mountain on Saturday, June 23, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Photographer and teacher Beth Reynolds will coach participants on shooting quality images while packing light, so bring only one camera, a light weight tripod and one or two lenses. The group's focus will be on learning to pay attention, reading the light and sharing in the observations of other group members to create better photos. Northfield Naturalist Beth Bazler will share information on mountain laurel, rocky ledges and the other plants and animals, who love this beautiful habitat. Wear a hat, long pants and sleeves and bring bug repellant, so we can take time and shoot comfortably. There is a fee of $10 per person and the event is for ages 12 and older. Take a springtime stroll back in time to when Turners Falls was a paper and cutlery producing power house-and see it all from the fabulously popular canal side trail and bike path. Using historical maps and photographs, geologist and industrial history buff Steve Winters will lead you back to early 19th century Montague when the first dam on the Connecticut River at Turners Falls was built, not for power, but for barge navigation. We'll investigate the ruins and existing structures of the Montague Paper Co., the John Russell Cutlery Co., and much more. Meet at the picnic tables next to the entrance to the Turners Falls Fishway and the bike path. This program is co-sponsored by Northfield Mountain and the Pioneer Valley Institute. The event is for ages 16 and older and the fee is free for Pioneer Valley Institute current members and $10 for non-members. Spring on the Connecticut River offers an unrivaled opportunity to witness the migration of shad, sea lamprey and other anadromous fish. These fish migrate from the ocean and head upriver to spawn in the rivers of their birth. A visit to the Turners Falls Fishway provides an opportunity to learn about these amazing journeys.
